Discovering the Auvergne Volcanoes
The Parc naturel régional des Volcans d'Auvergne welcomes you!
The history of the Auvergne Volcanoes
Located in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, the Volcans d'Auvergne are a fascinating testimony to France's past and present volcanic activity. Their history goes back millions of years, when massive eruptions created this unique landscape.Often considered "extinct" in the traditional sense, they are not totally inactive. Rather, they are in a state of dormancy, meaning that they can resume activity at any time, even if this is unlikely on a human scale.
The persistence of the Auvergne Volcanoes is due to plate tectonics. Situated at the junction of several tectonic plates, the region is a zone of weakness in the earth's crust where magma can rise.
